OK, more like, a Cupcake Goddess knock off Circle Skirt 🙂 As you know I made the shell for this a while back. I finally got lining and lace for it and finished hemming everything. Not to blow my own horn, but I think it looks really really nice!
This is a “self-drafted” skirt. But really, I just put on basic wide band waist for the waist part, and cut out a circle for the skirt piece. For some reason, I couldnt figure out a good way to cut out the skirt so that the bias was in the front, possibly due to lack of material + temporary stupidity. I ended up cutting out two half circles, realized that the biased seam wont be in the front like the one of cupcake goddess’ skirt, then went and cut those two pieces into eight pieces, pieced them together so that all the seams matches, and its biased seam in the front and sides. Luckily, it didn’t affect how it looks, just a lot more work!
For the lining, I also copied Cupcake Goddess and chose a bright yellow thin polyester with wide lace around the hem. Yellow and brown just goes too well together! I was actually hoping to find orange to match the stripes, but did not have any luck at Hancock. Choosing a thin lining was important so that I dont add more bulk to this skirt!
As for hemming the skirt, you have seen how I cut off excess and uneven fabric after it hung for a few days. An issue I always have with hemming a flared shaped garment is that once you fold in the hem, there’s always excess fabric and its hard to distribute them evenly, because the hemline is smaller than the edge of the fabric. So what I did was that I sergered the edge of the hem, in a mode that scrunched up the hem a little (see the knob that is turned to 2.0):
After that, when I folded the hem over to iron, it was much easier to make sure the hem is flat! Then I just blind hemmed the skirt, and tada! a perfect winter skirt is born.
I used to not like circle skirt, because i think it is too bulky and not great looking on a short girl. I think this one turned out just fine! The important thing is to use a very drapy material, hem it at a flattering length (for this one, right below the knee turned out good for me), and wear high heel!
